Is Sleeping On The Left Side Of Your Body Beneficial?

Most of us sleep on whichever side we are comfortable. A long time ago, I had no idea that sleeping on the left side is beneficial to our health until I consulted my doctor after experiencing sleep issues. If you’re struggling to find the best sleeping position, try sleeping on your left side for a change!

Here’s are some benefits of what sleeping on your left side can do for you:

  1. Better flow for the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. Experts believe that the lymphatic system drains into the thoracic duct which is located on the left side. Sleeping on the left side will help waste elimination speed up. This system also collects protein which has escaped from cells, sleeping on your left side helps get the protein where they need to be.

  1. Helps the Liver

The liver is located on the right side and it will easily be congested if you sleep on the right side. When you sleep on your left side toxins and substances can be neutralized by the liver before they are eliminated or being gathered in the liver.

  1. Helps the Spleen function better

The spleen is part of the lymphatic system and again found on the left side of the body. By sleeping on the left side, the gravity helps the right blood flow to the system and allows the spleen to filter all waste.

  1. No Acid Reflux or GERD

Acid reflex or GERD normally happens while sleeping. This happens when the stomach is below the cardiac sphincter which connects the esophagus and the stomach. When you sleep on the left side, the stomach won’t reach the esophagus and will prevent pain and heartburn while sleeping.

  1. Best for babies

Pregnant women are advised to sleep on the left side to prevent the liver from being congested. The baby in the womb will add weight towards the liver when a pregnant women lay on their right side. This will help the liver to work optimally.

  1. Heart-Friendly

The left side of the heart has a bigger role when it pumps blood to the body. When you sleep on the left side, you will help the heart to function better and pump the blood easier.

  1.  Helps bowel movement

The IV or ileocecal valve is where the junction of the large and small intestine is found. Sleeping on the left side will help with the proper removal of waste and will also help the digestion from small to large intestine. The gravity helps a lot with better bowel movements.
